The Division of Federated Information Systems is seeking a

Research Associate (Medical Informatics)

The Division of Federated Information Systems designs, develops and operates national and international IT infrastructures for the secure exchange of patient data, for example between university hospitals in the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research, biomaterial banks of the BBMRI-ERIC or the sites of the National Center for Tumor Diseases or the Medical Informatics Initiative. As a bridging department between the DKFZ and the University Medical Center Mannheim, we support physicians and scientists in the transfer of novel therapies into real-world applications.
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a research associate in the field of medical informatics for the next possible date.

Job description:

Pioneer new methods and concepts for the use of distributed data sets both within institutions and across institutional boundaries
Create IT processes for the exchange of patient data, while observing nationally and internationally applicable standards, norms and guidelines
Work on requirements together with future users of our federated IT solutions
Create open source software for processing sensitive patient data and deploy it in national and international research networks
Publish your results in publications and open source repositories and present them at scientific congresses and specialist conferences

To do this, you will work in a team of doctors, scientists and software developers. There, you will learn the necessary theory and translate it into software and usable systems. You will research and develop in cross-institutional collaborations in the areas of data integration, pseudonymization, distributed (database) systems, visualization, data analysis (including machine learning / artificial intelligence) and organizational frameworks (e.g. data protection). Prior knowledge in one or more of these areas is beneficial, but these skills can also be learned or developed as part of the job.
We develop with the technologies Java, Python, TypeScript (Angular), Clojure and Rust. Most of our code is published open-source under https://github.com/samply .

Requirements:

Completed studies in computer science, bioinformatics, medical informatics or a comparable qualification
Experience in developing web-based applications using common software technologies (see above), in modeling software architectures (e.g. UML) and in web protocols and paradigms (e.g. REST)
Communicative team player with reliable written and spoken German and English skills
Highly motivated, independent working manner, ability and willingness to pick up new information and skills quickly
Flexibility with regard to new tasks, methods and topics
