About EMBL

The IT Services team operates and supports the IT infrastructure and services at EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg and at the laboratory’s sites in Barcelona and Rome.
As part of IT Services, the Network team is responsible for managing and developing the network infrastructure in our data centres, on campus, and to our external network providers. As a leading scientific institution with highly data-intensive research, extensive data flows at and between the laboratory’s six sites and to the Internet, EMBL is connected to national and international scientific networks using state-of-the-art technologies from vendors including Cisco, Extreme Networks and Fortinet.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Network Engineer to join our team on-site at the headquarters in Heidelberg.

Your role

Operate and monitor the network infrastructure at multiple EMBL sites
Manage routers, switches and other network components
Participate in the decision making regarding network technologies and their lifecycle
Work closely with suppliers and providers to support the operation and further development of our network infrastructure
Evaluate the latest networking technologies
Collaborate with the IT teams across all EMBL sites
Maintain technical documentation

You have

at least 2 years of work experience in a professional IT support environment
A degree in computer science and/or equivalent professional experience
The ability to work in a self-motivated team and participate in technical decision making
Good understanding of networking technologies regarding OSI layers 1-4
A customer-oriented personality and excellent communication skills
Excellent knowledge of English. Proficiency in German is desirable.
Willingness to travel occasionally, mostly to other EMBL sites

You might also have

Relevant technical certifications such as CCNP
Experience in topics such as virtual networking, network access control and zero-trust security model, software defined networking
