Located on the DESY campus, EMBL Hamburg operates an integrated structural biology facility, which includes three state-of-the-art beamlines at the PETRA III synchrotron ring and is accessible to researchers worldwide.
The EMBL Hamburg IT team operates the IT infrastructure and services to support cutting-edge scientific research performed at the EMBL Hamburg unit. As a member of the IT team, you will be responsible for managing our large-scale high-performance IT infrastructure and for providing support to our scientific community. Working with the One-EMBL IT Services, which spans across six international sites, you will also contribute to the further integration of novel computing strategies across the laboratory, drive innovation in new technologies, and help our users to efficiently use the services you provide.

Your role

Your main responsibilities will include to:
manage and develop the local Linux-based compute infrastructure and services
manage and develop the Hamburg data storage and virtualization platforms
contribute to maintaining the local network and IT security infrastructure and services; support EMBL staff and visiting scientists on Linux, Windows and macOS platforms

You have

a degree in Computer Science or equivalent qualification
at least 3 years of professional experience in supporting heterogeneous IT infrastructures
experience in managing, deploying and troubleshooting Linux-based systems and software
experience in administration and troubleshooting of network switches, routers and firewall appliances
knowledge of server hardware management
good working knowledge of a scripting language
excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support a diverse and international user community
a service-oriented attitude, are well-organised and able to work to deadlines
excellent working knowledge of English

You might also have

experience in managing additional operating systems (Windows, macOS)
work experience in a scientific computing environment
